Episode 33: The Amazon: How to plan a trip, plus the “selfie tourism” wildlife controversy

December 20, 2017

Visiting the Amazon is a magical experience. The sounds alone are stunning: insects buzzing, birds screeching, creatures slithering. You can stay in a rainforest ecolodge, take a boat on the river at night, meet indigenous people. In this episode of “Get Outta Here,” hosted by AP Travel Editor Beth Harpaz, we hear from Peter Prengaman, AP’s news director in Rio de Janeiro, about his recent trip to the Amazon. Along with tips for how to plan your own trip, we’ll look at issues raised by an animal advocacy group about wildlife encounters in the region. Several reports say sloths and other animals are being harmed by “selfie tourism,” where captive animals are presented to visitors for photos.
